Bentonia Blues Festival 2008

We bring you news about the blues.  It's the real deal - men who grew up picking cotton, playing in the juke joints - places with dirt floors and dancing people.  The place is hot and there's no room to move, but people do. They have no choice but to feel the blues because it comes from our souls.

America created the blues in African American people. It's a music form that was borne from the pain and suffering of a people.  Africans sing and play music as a way of life.  The African slaves in America carried their culture with them and though denied the use of the drums and traditional instruments, their souls continued to sing.

Roosevelt TwittyThey sang work songs in the fields. They did shouts, chants, rhymes and created instruments from whatever was on hand.  In fact, tap dance originated as a form of communication because they could no longer do so with the drum.  They would put rocks between their toes and let the rhythms speak.

So, the blues developed from this spirit of pain and oppression and it is an art form that can't be duplicated or replicated anywhere else by anyone else.  There are Blues Masters, people who have developed the style of picking and the use of the notes to the utmost.  We thank those who came before us and developed this art and carry on the tradition the best we can.

Blues music has influenced the development of all of the music in America and is the basis of rock, rhythm and blues, jazz, blue grass - all of it.
